The Koshi Tappu wildlife reserve is a paradise for bird watchers, with an area of 175 square kilometers. The park is situated on the bank of the Sapta Koshi River. The vegetation here is mainly of wetland grassland, scrub and deciduous forests. The reserve is unique for its wild buffaloes (Arna). Other mammals visible in the reserve are the hog deer, wild boar, spotted deer and blue bull. The species of birds total 350 here, including 20 of ducks, many storks, egrets, herons, and the endangered swamp partridges and Bengal floricans. The reserve is resting place for migrating birds not seen anywhere in Nepal. The endangered gharial, marsh crocodile and Gangetic dolphin are also recorded in the Koshi River.
How to get to Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve?
By air: It is a -45 minute flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar and1:45 hrs drive will take you to our Deluxe Wildlife Camp inside the wildlife reserve.
By Road: 500 km. (about 10 hrs. drive) from Kathmandu to Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve.

Birds Watching:
The best bird in Koshi : Swamp Francolin, Black-necked Stork, Lesser Adjutant, Comb Duck, Falcated Duck, Spot-billed Duck, Cotton Pigmy Goose, Baer's Pochard, Bailon's Crake, Ruddy Crake, Greater Painted Snipe, Pheasant-tailed jacana, Yellow-wattled Lapwing, Indian Courser, Black-bellied Tern, Imperial Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, Lesser Kestrel, Bristle Grassbird, Striated Grassbird etc. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve offers many options to give full opportunities to view the wildlife at its best.
Morning / Evening Jungle Walk
The jungle along the belts of the Koshi River, part of the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is known for its richness in birds and other animal species. The river lagoons and wetlands provide excellent opportunity to sight bird life, deer and herds of water buffaloes.
Rafting
Taking a raft down the Koshi River is another alternative for exploring the reserve. Here, you can see the water birds or animals off to their daily chores with wonderful sights like Kingfishers diving down the river looking for food, the marsh muggers or the ghariyal crocodile’s sun bathing but of course out of reach. You might be lucky enough to spot the rare wild buffaloes. Down the end, at the barrage Gangetic river dolphins could be your best view of the day.
Village Walk
This is another interesting activity. Tharus, the early inhabitants of the region have their own unique way of living not affected by the western influence. Their beautifully decorated homes and their way of living can be an interesting part of the tour. The village is also plastic-free, one of the few environmentally aware and clean villages in the country. The Koshi Tappu Wildlife Camp itself took this initiative towards environmental awareness and preservation.
Day 01: Upon arrival in the Wildlife Reserve, the manager welcomes the guest & offers drinks and time to refresh. Attend briefing about the tour until lunch break. After lunch explore river lagoons and wetlands to sight different birds, deer and herds of water buffaloes. Slide show on the natural history of the reserve followed by Nepali dinner
Day 02: Morning jungle treks to sight Gangatic Dolphins, marsh muggers and endangered Ghaarial crocodile on the riverbank. We also have the chance to visit and study the unique village settlements of Tharu community.
Day 03: Early morning bird watching walk around the camp area or marshland outside the reserve to see the storks, ibises, snipes, waterfowl, birds of prey etc. After lunch visit to Pink Tower to see the view of the marshland of Koshi Tappu. Cultural dance followed by barbecue dinner in the evening.
Day 04: After breakfast leave for Biratnagar to catch the flight to Kathmandu or overland journey.
3 NIGHTS 4 DAYS:
Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel
Day 02: Transfer to airport. Fly Kathmandu to Biratnagar. Transfer to Jungle Lodge. Jungle activities. Overnight stay at the lodge
Day 03 - 04: Full day jungle activities. Overnight stay at the lodge
Day 05: After breakfast and early morning activities you will be transferred back to Biratnagar airport for your return flight to Kathmandu.
Day 06: Transfer to airport for journey back home.
